AWS enters cloud collaboration with VMware
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and virtualisation specialist VMware have announced a new partnership to make VMware’s software-defined data centre software vSphere available over the AWS cloud.
The companies have announced plans to launch VMware Cloud on AWS, which will allow customers to run any application across vSphere-based public, private and hybrid cloud environments.
The service will be operated, managed and sold by VMware as an elastically scalable service, either on-demand or as a subscription service.
Customers will be able to take advantage of AWS services including developer tools, analytics and databases, and the service will operate on dedicated, purpose-built AWS infrastructure.
VMware Cloud on AWS is currently in technology preview. The company plans to conduct invite-only betas at the start of next year and commercially launch the service in mid-2017.
“This jointly architected service represents a significant investment in engineering, operations, support and sales resources from both companies,” VMware VP of Products and Cloud Platform Mark Lohmeyer said in a blog post announcing the partnership.
“It will deliver the power of VMware’s SDDC infrastructure software across compute, network and storage (with vSphere, VSAN and NSX) while providing access to advanced AWS services, backed by an integrated customer support experience.”
