Telstra and Microsoft add breakthrough services to portfolio

Telstra and Microsoft have unveiled Australia's first hosted IP telephony service integrated with Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS). This will enable Australian organisations to place high-definition Telstra IP Telephony calls directly from applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office Communicator and Microsoft SharePoint.

The Microsoft OCS on Telstra IP Telephony (TIPT) services offering means customers can now see at a glance if their contacts are on a phone call, busy or available to be contacted. If available, the user simply clicks on their name to initiate and then manage the telephone call.

Telstra's Product Management Executive Director, Philip Jones, said that until now Microsoft OCS integration was limited to customers with premise-based IP telephony services and the new service would improve efficiency by coupling the enhanced features offered by Telstra IP telephony with certain Microsoft programs.

Microsoft Australia's Communication Sector Director, Kevin Brough, said this is an example of deep telecommunication integration and the first phase of the unified communications solutions to be delivered through the Microsoft and Telstra alliance.

"Microsoft and Telstra have been working closely to leverage each organisation's respective strengths to provide customers with solutions that can change the way they do business," Brough said.

"To support the deployment and integration of the necessary Microsoft software, Telstra and Microsoft are jointly training leading unified communications partners," Brough said.

Microsoft and Telstra have also announced the availability of Microsoft Online Services on the Telstra T-Suite platform, giving Australian organisations of all sizes access to a range of business-oriented cloud computing services.

Microsoft Online Services delivers business communications and collaboration software such as Exchange Online, Office Communications Online, SharePoint Online and Office Live Meeting as a simple subscription service, hosted by Microsoft, and provided through the Telstra nationwide Next G and Next IP networks.

Brough said Microsoft Online Services provided Australian businesses with greater choice in the way they purchased, deployed and maintained the software designed to help their businesses run better.
