Fujitsu's $12.2m western Sydney DC upgrade

Fujitsu will invest $12.2 million in power infrastructure and internal capacity upgrades to its Western Sydney Data Centre (WSDC).

The company signed an agreement with Connect Infrastructure last month, marking the start of a six-month project that will significantly increase the capacity of the site allowing for future expansion and growth.

The Fujitsu Data Centre 2025 Roadmap, announced in May 2015, details the strategic direction for its seven data centres across Australia.

It outlines how the company is to take advantage of rapidly evolving infrastructure technologies that maximise performance, reliability, data security and sustainability.

The WSDC project is the second initiative from the roadmap, following a $10 million upgrade of Fujitsu’s Malaga data centre in Perth to Tier IV certification announced in May.

The Fujitsu WSDC project has two components — a $7 million power infrastructure upgrade and a $5.2 million upgrade of internal infrastructure capacity.

Two 33 kV high-voltage feeders will be installed, which will run in two separate underground routes, each approximately 3.5 kilometres long, from the Blacktown Endeavour Energy Transmission Station to the data centre and provide an additional 30 MVA of power capacity to the site.

Construction will commence in early August.

“We are seeing an ever-increasing demand from our customers for enterprise-grade data centre facilities as they prepare for digital transformation and the evolving data needs of a hyper connected world,” said Mike Foster, CEO of Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand.

“With our data centre roadmap we have outlined a program of investment that will ensure that our capability stays ahead of our customers’ needs.

“The planning and design component of this project has been in place for approximately 12 months and we expect to see construction commencing shortly. The project team has had some interesting geographical challenges to address, including the need to underbore both the Great Western Highway and the M4 Motorway.”

The Fujitsu WSDC was commissioned in 2011 and secured a 4-star NABERS rating in December 2014.

The Fujitsu data centre footprint in Australia comprises over 25,000 m2 of highly secure and fully redundant facilities in seven sites, including the Fujitsu WSDC.
