Hewlett-Packard ProLiant DL165, DL385 and SL165z G7 server platforms

Hewlett-Packard has introduced three ProLiant G7 server platforms that are claimed to offer improved performance and power savings over previous generations. The line includes the DL165 G7 and DL385 G7 rack-optimised servers, as well as the SL165z G7 scale-out ‘skinless’ server.

Delivering a 23:1 consolidation ratio, the servers, with AMD Opteron 6100 series processors, increase operational efficiencies and provide modular, standards-based building blocks that advance clients towards a converged infrastructure.

They are claimed to boost systems performance while utilising fewer servers than previously needed, allowing users to reduce capital expenditures, energy costs and software licensing fees by a claimed 97%.

The Sea of Sensors energy-saving feature optimises system cooling and increases efficiency by automatically tracking thermal activity through a collection of up to 32 smart sensors. The sensors automatically adjust system components such as fans, memory and input/output processing to reduce energy usage.

The Dynamic Power Capping technology in the company’s Insight Control improves data centre utilisation and reclaims over-provisioned energy by enabling IT managers to accurately monitor and control the power used by each server. By capping server power usage, it is claimed users can triple data centre capacity.

The Power Advisor enables clients to improve energy efficiency by more accurately configuring systems based on real-time power guidance for their specific workloads.

Other energy-efficiency innovations, combined with the AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors, are claimed to deliver a 27 times performance-per-watt increase.

Its Insight Control software improves management productivity while reducing operational expenses by allowing clients to control the management and monitoring of the server infrastructure on site or remotely.

Its Integrated Lights-Out Advanced feature enables clients to simplify server management and troubleshoot problems from any location, regardless of the server’s operating state.

The Insight Remote Support software reduces issue resolution time by a claimed 20% with secure remote support for HP servers and storage, including monitoring for hardware failure.
