DTA releases Trusted Digital Identity framework

The Digital Transformation Agency has released the first components of the new Trusted Digital Identity framework, designed to act as a standard for digital identity across Australia.

The first 10 documents comprising the new framework outline the accreditation standards organisations will need to meet in order to be approved to provide digital identity services for the planned Govpass system.

These standards have been developed in consultation with the financial sector, privacy advocates, digital identity experts and the public.

In addition, the framework outlines requirements for security, usability, privacy protection, accessibility, fraud protection and risk management.

As envisioned by the Digital Identity Framework, accredited identity services providers would authenticate individuals, and government agencies and other organisations would refer to the providers when verifying the identity of these individuals. This would mean individuals need only prove their identity once, increasing both convenience and security.

The DTA said that additional components to the framework will be added later this year that will cover an offline option for creating a digital identity for people who do not have the required documentation to create their digital identity online.

The verification and authentication technology for the shared digital identity system is currently in beta development.
