Service NSW adopts Android Pay

Service NSW has become the first government agency in Australia to adopt contactless mobile payment service Android Pay for payments for government services.

Android Pay is now supported across all 64 Service NSW centres in the state, the agency announced, and support will be introduced for the agency’s digital stores, website and app in the next few months.

NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet said the move is aimed at giving customers another payment option for services such as drivers’ registrations.

“Governments have traditionally been very slow on the uptake when it comes to new technology, whereas customers latch on much more quickly. With Service NSW we are completely changing that — becoming fast followers — so that our customer service keeps pace with the options people want,” he said.

The introduction of support for Google’s mobile wallet service is the latest in a line of enhancements the government has made to the Service NSW Payment Services Platform, which is designed to act as a single gateway for all government payments.

Service NSW has also announced it will soon launch Australia’s first digital licences, designed to eliminate the need to carry around multiple cards and allow licences to be downloaded and displayed on smartphones and tablets.

The first three digital licences will be recreational fishing licences, as well as responsible service of alcohol certificates and responsible conduct of gambling certificates.
