DTA to manage data.gov.au and NationalMap

The Digital Transformation Agency has been assigned responsibility for managing the government’s key data platforms.

The DTA will take over management of the data.gov.au and NationalMap platforms from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Data.gov.au already has more than 28,000 datasets and was visited by around 52,000 users in the past month, while the NationalMap has 10,000 datasets and 12,000 monthly users.

Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor said the move forms part of a government initiative to streamline its approach to deliver high-value platforms.

“The DTA works on many whole-of-government solutions and it makes sense to roll over these data platforms which interact closely with work the DTA already does,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government has entered private beta for its Govpass single identity system for government digital services.

“Through Govpass, Australians will be able to easily and safely prove who they are when using government services online. A simple task like applying for a tax file number will be reduced from about 30 days to a matter of minutes,” Taylor said.

The 2017–18 Budget included $15.2 million to continue development of the platform, as well as $33.6 million to develop four related shared platforms, including one that will allow users to update their details once and share this update across as many agencies and service providers as they choose.
