NT launches online water portal
The Northern Territory government has launched an online portal for water planning and licensing information as part of its efforts to improve transparency within government.
The new portal will be a centralised repository for water licence information, covering legislative and administrative data, information on licensing and water allocation planning, details on water extraction sources as well as maps and details of current water extraction licences.
Residents will be able to access water licensing decisions for all current licences. Currently the notices of decision are merely published in local newspapers.
Minister for Environment and Natural Resources Lauren Moss said the previous Country Liberal Party government “destroyed trust in government” and that the current government is determined not to make the same mistakes.
“We are returning transparency and fairness to water use by reinstating community-based Water Advisory Committees, ensuring Indigenous communities have access to water allocations for economic development opportunities on country, ensuring all large water users apply for a water licence, including currently exempt mining and petroleum operations, and constructing this new water portal.”
