TD-LTE trial produces consistently high speeds of between 40-70 Mbps

4G wireless broadband provider vividwireless has announced the results of the first Australian trial of superfast mobile wireless broadband - TD-LTE (time division duplex long term evolution). The two-month trial delivered peak speeds as high as 128 Mbps and consistent speeds between 40-70 Mbps.

These speeds enable customers to download the Oscar-nominated Australian movie Animal Kingdom in less than three minutes; Kanye West’s latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 18 seconds; and Andre Agassi’s Open: An Autobiography to an e-reader in 10 seconds.

vividwireless CEO Martin Mercer said the excellent trial results, achieved with technology partner Huawei Australia, mean that Australians will soon be able to access very high-speed mobile broadband services that are much faster than ADSL2+.

“The purpose of this trial was to see if the advanced TD-LTE technology is mature enough to deliver extremely fast mobile broadband services to our customers.

“This trial has established that extremely fast, high-quality mobile broadband services are within our reach and can be delivered quickly and cost effectively.

“Australians want - and need - fast, reliable wireless broadband services. The proliferation of small screen devices with considerable processing power and an advanced user interface is driving an insatiable demand for portable, high-speed broadband.

“Evaluating technologies like TD-LTE and assessing their suitability for our national rollout, together with the ongoing optimisation of our existing 4G network, ensures that we continue to be Australia’s leading wireless broadband provider.”

The trial commenced in December 2010 and was conducted in inner-city Redfern, as well as Western Sydney around Horsley Park. These locations allowed vividwireless to test the performance of the technology in high-demand, high-density, inner-city conditions such as apartments and cafes, as well as suburban conditions.

Huawei Australia Chief Technology Officer Peter Rossi said: “vividwireless and Huawei set a new standard for mobile broadband when we launched Australia’s first mobile WiMAX network last year. In this Australian-first TD-LTE trial, we’re taking those speeds to a whole new level all over again. Since Huawei launched the world’s first TD-LTE network in Shanghai last year, the technology has continued to improve - demonstrating spectacular download speeds.”
