Consult Australia, SCCANZ publish smart city guide

Consulting industry association Consult Australia and the Smart Cities Council ANZ have jointly published a guide designed to help consultants better understand the changing tools for designing city.

The new guide, published at the Consult Australia ASPAC Leaders Conference in Sydney today, defines and lays out the functions of a smart city, contrasting differences between traditional project challenges with smart city outcomes.

The guide also includes a checklist for collaboration across the sector, as well as a series of questions for consultants to assess clients on smart city awareness, technology and related strategy.

A smart city is defined under the guide as “one that uses technology, data and intelligent design to enhance the city’s liveability, workability and sustainability”.

The three core functions of a smart city are collecting data through sensors, devices and existing systems; communicating that data using wired or wireless networks; and analysing the data to understand what’s happening now and what’s likely to happen next.

“As the tools for designing cities change, so too must the practices of firms in the built environment. This is in part about understanding technological advance and increasing the role of data, but it is equally about understanding the culture of collaboration and constant improvement associated with digital,” Consult Australia Chief Executive Megan Motto said.

“The guide contrasts differences between traditional project challenges with smart city outcomes and provides a series of questions for consultants to assess clients on smart city awareness, technology and related strategy.”
