DTA seeking next data fellow cohort

The Digital Transformation Agency has opened applications for the next round of its data fellowship program.

Under the program, the agency selects high-performing members of the Australian Public Service to take part in an intensive three-month placement with the CSIRO's data innovation arm Data61 to work on data-related projects to transform the government's approach to real-world problems.

Applications will be open until 3 August. Applicants will need to detail a data-related project proposal and be endorsed by a data champion or senior executive.

Participants are selected based on criteria including the potential benefit of the project to federal, state and local government agencies, the feasibility of the project and how easy it would be to apply the developed solution on a national scale.

The latest cohort of seven data fellows was announced last month.

The fellows are undertaking projects including developing techniques to automate the way agricultural land uses are mapped at the national scale and identifying and targeting potential biosecurity risks at Australian airports.

Other past projects have involved developing a new way of measuring household spending using social media data, using machine learning techniques to better predict economic growth in Australia and using ASIC data to develop techniques for detecting harmful trading.
