DTA picks latest cohort of data fellows

The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) has selected its second cohort of data fellows, culled from data specialists within the Australian Public Service.

The seven fellows will undertake three-month placements at the CSIRO's Data61 data innovation group, where they will develop solutions for data-related problems or opportunities.

Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA) Innovation Centre Lab lead Todd Campbell will explore using text analytics to identify insights and risks in prudential supervisory reviews of insurance companies' financial condition reports, as well as compile an overview of the industry.

Rakhesh Devadas, a geospatial scientist at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences, will seek to develop techniques to automate the way agricultural land uses are mapped at the national scale.

The DTA's own Patrick Drake-Brockman, a senior advisor at its investment office, will evaluate using data to analyse government buying patterns to improve the procurement process.

Clean Energy Regulator analyst support officer Gabriella Duddy will use machine learning to help the regulator detect non-compliance in its energy schemes.

Department of Agriculture and Water Resources senior data analyst Dipangkar Kundu will work on an empirical model for identifying and targeting potential biosecurity risks at Australian airports.

ABS statistician Daniel Merkas will develop machine learning models aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of the bureau's address register to improve survey accuracy.

Finally, Department of Human Services data analyst Jack Xu will build a simulation model to replicate call centre activities at the Department, with the goal of lifting the customer experience.
