AWS Sydney region gets PROTECTED-level cert

Amazon Web Services has secured PROTECTED-level certification from the Australian Cyber Security Centre for its AWS Asia–Pacific Sydney region.

The accreditation will allow Australian public and regulated private sector organisations to process and store data at the PROTECTED government security classification level using the AWS Sydney Region.

The certification covers 42 AWS services, ranging from compute, storage and databases to analytics, application integration and governance.

According to ACSC Head Alastair MacGibbon, the certification “provides Australian Government agencies assurance that these services meet stringent Australian Government security requirements”.

In addition, the move is in line with the Digital Transformation Agency’s Secure Cloud Strategy for enabling further cloud adoption within the federal government.

The agency is itself already using AWS to deliver cloud.gov.au, a secure, cloud-based platform for hosting website applications and helping government agencies quickly build standardised digital services.

“Cloud is a critical part of the DTA’s whole-of-government transformation agenda. The protected certification of AWS makes it easier for agencies to leverage cloud services,” DTA CEO Randall Brugeaud said.

The accreditation will also allow AWS Partner Network participants to build protected-level cloud services for customers in the region.
