Driverless cars being demonstrated in NSW

The Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI) will today hold a demonstration of driverless vehicles for members of the NSW Staysafe road safety committee.

The demonstration at Volvo Australia headquarters in North Ryde will be designed to show committee members the latest autonomous vehicle safety technologies.

Semi-autonomous Volvo XC90 vehicles will be tested for committee members and other attendees.

The demonstration is being conducted as part of NSW Staysafe's current inquiry into driverless vehicles and road safety, which is accepting submissions until 11 April.

As part of the inquiry, the NSW Government is assessing the capacity of driverless vehicle technology to reduce accidents and injuries.

It will also examine the extent to which NSW road rules are prepared for the introduction of driverless vehicle technologies and which, if any, regulatory and policy changes will be required.

The leader of the ADVI, road and transport industry research and consulting provider ARRB Group, has estimated that driverless vehicles have the potential to reduce Australia's $27 billion annual road safety spending by 90% and drastically reduce the rate of accidents and injuries.
