NSW to create major tech hub in Sydney
The NSW Government will work with Australia’s largest tech company, Atlassian, and other industry players to design a new technology and innovation precinct in Sydney.
The new precinct will stretch from Central to Eveleigh in the inner south, and is expected to create 10,000 new jobs by 2036.
A NSW Government taskforce headed by Jobs for NSW Chair and former Telstra CEO David Thodey will be established to lead design and development of the precinct.
Representatives from the University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney and Sydney Business Chamber, co-working space Fishburners, industry representative body Tech Sydney and a range of Australian start-ups will all also join the taskforce.
“This new technology precinct ... will cement Sydney as the technology capital of Australia and create more secure jobs,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
“Central to Eveleigh is already home to Australia’s largest cluster of start-up firms. We want to use that as a base to grow new jobs and new businesses.”
Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar said the creation of a technology hub could help Sydney fulfil its potential of becoming one of the world’s leading tech cities.
“If you look at every successful innovation hub in the world, from Silicon Valley to Tel Aviv, they all have a centre of gravity — a place the start-up community calls home,” he said.
“I’m delighted that now our tech community will have the same opportunity to point to a map and call it home.”
