95% of large enterprises are falling behind

Nearly all (95%) large companies are falling behind the elite few that are achieving the top level of digital transformation, according to a survey commissioned by Dell EMC.

The global survey by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) finds that just 5% of large organisations are in the final ‘transformed’ stage of IT transformation maturity.

A further 12% of companies are in the lowest ‘legacy’ stage of transformation, with the majority of companies in either the second ‘emerging’ stage (42%) or the third ‘evolving’ stage (41%).

Yet 71% of all respondents agree that IT transformation is essential for remaining competitive in the digital economy.

Companies in the transformed stage are more likely to believe that their organisation is in a strong position to compete and succeed in the market (85% compared to just 43% of the least mature companies). They are also more than twice as likely to meet their revenue goals — with 96% having exceeded their revenue targets last year.

Transformed companies are also more than eight times more likely than the least mature organisations to report a highly cooperative relationship between IT and the business, seven times more likely to report ‘excellent progress’ running IT as a profit centre and seven times more likely to have IT viewed by the business as a competitive differentiator.

Migration to transformational technologies is increasing, the survey shows. More than half (54%) of respondents are using converged or hyperconverged infrastructure and 58% have adopted scale-out storage systems.

Adoption of modern IT processes is also on the rise, with around half of respondents committed to moving towards software-defined as a long-term strategy, 43% reporting at least ‘good’ adoption of DevOps practices and 26% having ‘extensive’ or ‘established’ self-service capabilities.
