Data science award developed by UTS, Australian Museum

UTS and the Australian Museum will work together on establishing a prize for excellence in data science.

The award, which forms part of Australia’s science awards program, the Eureka Prizes, will recognise the growth and impact of data science in discovery and innovation.

“Data science is a very important research area for theory, technology and its applications. You can already see the influence of data science, transforming entire industries from oceanography, medicine and physics to market research,” said UTS Executive Director of Data Science Distinguished Professor Chengqi Zhang.

“The impact of data science is very real — both in its application to every conceivable industry, but also in its ability to enable cutting-edge technologies.”

The UTS Eureka Prize for Excellence in Data Science awards AU$10,000 to an individual or team that has made either breakthrough discoveries or a significant impact in data science research.

“The achievements of the Eureka Prize finalists are inspirational and vitally important for Australia,” said Australian Museum Director and CEO Kim McKay AO.

“Establishing this award highlights the pioneering reputation of UTS in both academia and scientific fields, and we look forward to receiving high-quality applications for this award in its inaugural year.”

It is hoped that the new award will stimulate Australian researchers to excel in the field of data science.

“Recognising data science through a Eureka Prize category supports the UTS belief of data science as a rapidly evolving field that can influence the world in ways that we can only dream of,” said Zhang.

“I hope this prize will encourage great Australian researchers to collaborate with other domain knowledge experts to make data science more powerful.”
