Melbourne is fastest-growing edge metro

Sydney is one of the fastest-growing core metros in Asia–Pacific in terms of interconnection bandwidth, while Melbourne is the fastest-growing edge metro, according to Equinix’s 2023 Global Interconnection Index.

Sydney’s interconnection bandwidth is forecast to reach 942 Tbps by 2025, the report predicts, which would represent a five-year CAGR of 39%. This is ahead of the global average growth expected over this time of 35%, and in-line with the Asia–Pacific average.

Meanwhile Melbourne’s interconnection bandwidth is on track to grow at a 53% CAGR over the same period, and the region is the edge metro with the highest per cent mix of interconnection from enterprise sectors rather than from telecom and internet companies.

Equinix VP of Digital Transformation and Segmentation Steve Madden said this demonstrates that Australia’s digital leaders are rethinking their business to implement futureproof infrastructure on technology platforms.

“In today’s dynamic setting, every business is becoming a digital provider, which requires a new type of digital infrastructure built sustainably around leveraging ecosystems to deliver seamless digital experiences,” he said.

“Those with a digital-first strategy in place, investing in a robust, future-looking business model and interconnecting to rich ecosystems, are prepared to scale, adapt and thrive.”

Both enterprises and service providers are forecast to interconnect to edge infrastructure 20% faster than the core globally, the report found.
