Toyota adopts cloud-based backup platform

Logicalis has completed a project to provide a cloud-based backup-as-a-service (BaaS) offering for Toyota Motor Corporation.

The car manufacturer has adopted the Logicalis services across all its departments, including manufacturing sales and distribution, HR and financial. Toyota’s backup processes were previously spread across four different technology platforms.

The new backup platform uses storage technology from EMC. The implementation includes the provisioning of local backup infrastructure, duplicated in the Logicalis Cloud.

Under the companies' agreement, Logicalis is providing backup services on a pay-per-use basis. Toyota CIO Ellis Brover said the project has allowed the company to reduce its overall backup costs by 20-30%.

“Toyota has had servers in the cloud but we had never put backup in the cloud,” he said. “This a new concept for most companies and we were glad to be the first adopters for something that provides such transformative and beneficial effects for the business.”

Logicalis’ BaaS offering also includes periodic restoration testing to ensure backups have been successful.
