$9.2m investment in SA 'space' school
Adelaide’s Hamilton Secondary College is recognised as a leader in space and STEM education, and is slated for a $9.2 million upgrade as part of a broader $1.3 billion education build investment by the South Australian Government.
The upgrade, which is creating 22 new jobs, includes the construction of only the second permanent planetarium in South Australia, helping the school to continue its development in the space education field and build on its strong STEM focus.
The school will also receive a new performing arts centre featuring a 152-seat theatre, major refurbishment of the existing music and drama building, refurbishment of the resource centre, air-conditioning and acoustic upgrades for one of school’s buildings, heating and insulation in the gymnasium, and upgrades to the school’s frontage facing Marion Road.
Education Minister John Gardner said the build at Hamilton Secondary College was one of a kind.
“Hamilton Secondary College is widely known as a leader in space and STEM education, and the construction of only the state’s second permanent planetarium will enhance this reputation and will hopefully inspire more young people to pursue a career in the space industry,” said Minister Gardner.
“With shovels in the ground on so many schools building projects across the state, our record-breaking $1.3 billion education build is meeting a range of needs across our education system while providing a massive jobs boost for South Australia.
“We are lifting capacity for schools in areas with rapidly growing public school enrolments, improving facilities across the state that sorely need it, and ensuring that Year 7 transitions into high school.
“With more than 100 school building projects set to be delivered across the state, we are providing a solid pipeline of construction jobs over the coming years while we build what matters for South Australians,” he said.
