Union flags concerns with e-learning replacement

A recent ABC News report has highlighted concerns raised by the Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) in response to Education Department plans to replace its 18-year-old The Learning Place online learning platform.

The move will see the Department shift to QLearn, which it believes to be functionally superior, calling out the benefits of real-time reporting and analytics, as well as parental access, as key differences between the two. Trials of QLearn will commence at a small number of schools later this month.

Concerns from QTU centre around the provision of adequate funding allocation to cover required training in the new system, along with a fear that current system resources may be lost in the transition.

According to the article, while the Department suggests that teacher and staff training will be carried out through standard school professional development arrangements, the union is encouraging members to refrain from participating in training outside of rostered duty time until additional funding is made available.

Additionally, the union is calling for assurances that teachers will still be able to access existing resources under the new system, given the effort that has already gone into their creation.
