.sydney domain celebrates first year

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the .sydney domain name. Registrar Neustar has revealed that nearly 9000 domain names have been registered since its launch.

Early adopters of the .sydney domain included the City of Sydney, Luna Park, the Sydney Fish Market and the International Wing Chun Academy.

According to the registrar, 97% of all .sydney domain names are registered by Australians, with 77% of these registered to individuals and businesses from New South Wales.

Sydney itself is the suburb with the most .sydney domain name registrants, followed by Parramatta, Surry Hills and Balmain.

The most visited .sydney domains by Alexa ranking include www.barangaroo.sydney, www.fieldday.sydney and www.agentfinder.sydney.

Neustar processes 29 million DNS queries per month for .sydney domain names, or an average of 900,000 queries per day.

Neustar Director of Product Management George Pongas said it had been a successful first year for the .sydney domain.

“We are pleased with the consumer demand for .sydney domain names to date and look forward to seeing proud Sydneysiders and businesses serving the state warmly embracing the namespace as awareness continues to grow,” he said.

“It’s encouraging to see the number of .sydney owners using their new domains in their marketing and advertising to connect to their city. This is a testament to their endorsement of the city’s new home online.”
