Windows 10 to integrate with even rivals' smartphones
Microsoft is promising closer integration with a user's other devices in the upcoming Windows 10 OS, teasing features including a companion app compatible with Windows, Android and iOS smartphones.
Windows 10's new Phone Companion app is designed to ensure data including photos, notes, documents and music sync across a user's desktop computer and smartphones.
In a blog post introducing the feature, Microsoft Corporate VP of Operating Systems Joe Belfiore said Windows 10 has been designed to give users a seamless experience as they transition between devices.
Cloud storage service OneDrive will be used to sync data between the phone and Windows 10. The service can be used to access music downloaded through Windows 10 on Windows, Android and iOS devices, and to sync notes and photos between devices.
Microsoft has also integrated digital assistant Cortana onto Windows 10, as well as the OS's new browser, Microsoft Edge.
The company has now announced a Cortana app for Android and iOS smartphones as a companion to Cortana on Windows 10. It will support most of the features available on Windows Phone devices, but not those requiring deeper integration with the OS such as hands-free voice activation.
Microsoft has revealed plans to offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade to all users of Windows 7 or later. The OS is expected to launch in July.
