.auDA seeks deletion of 1025 .au domains

The administrator of the .au domain, .auDA has asked a domain name registrar to delete 1025 names that are using Australian company details without authorisation.

In a statement, .auDA said it has asked the registrar to place the .au domain names in policy delete before a given deadline.

The request was made after an investigation determined that the reseller of an accredited registrar was issuing domains that matched all or most of .auDA’s criteria for identifying the unauthorised business use of Australian company and business details.

A number of the domain names appear to be selling goods mainly sourced in China, but registrations do not appear to be coming from China alone — .auDA’s investigations also identified sources from Eastern Europe, North America and other parts of Asia that are behind the registrations.

“The swift work of our team and the good relationships we have built with our Registrars mean that these matters can be dealt with quickly and with the least possible negative impact on the .au domain space. We value the security and trust consumers put in .au and work hard to ensure we maintain that,” .auDA CEO Cameron Boardman said.

“Work continues in this current unauthorised business name audit and we will report back in full, once the process is complete.”
