An integrated deduplication and backup and recovery solution has been released by Acronis. Called the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10, it is the next generation of the True Image systems. It offers data deduplication, which can cut storage requirements by up to 90% by eliminating backup copies of redundant data.

The Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is capable of backing up and restoring any Microsoft or Linux-based servers or workstations to their full operating state prior to any failure. This comprises the entire hard disk including operating system, or individual applications, updates, settings and data. This also allows small, medium and large organisations to simply automate backup and disaster recovery processes across both physical and virtual environments, including physical to virtual migration capabilities, in a single system.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 supports virtual environments from VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Xensource and Parallels. The product includes a host-based virtual machine (VM) backup agent, enabling backup and restore of live VMs through VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V APIs without installing a client in each VM.

The solution allows personnel and time savings with a centralised, policy-based management for distributed IT systems and infrastructures. The solution has the ability to scale to thousands of machines, enabling an IT administrator to design and execute a backup strategy around the globe and match the growth of a business.

At a time when organisations are reducing spend on hardware, Acronis allows administrators to leverage existing platforms without further investment. The universal restore option means systems can be restored to dissimilar hardware, eliminating the need to acquire identical standby hardware.
