HP StorageWorks LTO-5 Ultrium tape drives

Monday, 12 April, 2010

HP has expanded its linear tape open (LTO) technology portfolio with the upgraded StorageWorks LTO-5 Ultrium tape drives. Available with the StorageWorks MSL tape libraries, the archive solutions enable businesses to manage information through enhanced data protection, disaster recovery as well as long-term data retention operations.

The drives are claimed to improve backup performance and reduce data loss with built-in encryption. This prevents unlawful access, in the event of theft or malicious use, by encoding data to ensure it is unreadable to unauthorised users. With nearly double the capacity of LTO-4 tape drives and encryption support, LTO-5 drives can store more data at a lower cost while meeting data security requirements.

Benefits of the tape drive, built with LTO-5 Ultrium data cartridges, include improved business performance through faster data backup and retrieval - with a 6 Gbps (serial attached SCSI) SAS or 8 Gbps fibre channel connection, the tape cartridges store up to 3 TB of data per cartridge in under 3 h, which is claimed to double the performance and require up to 75% less media than previous generations.

Other benefits are the reduced storage hardware costs and easy integration into existing environments to meet higher capacity or performance requirements. Read and write compatibility is provided with LTO-4 media as well as read compatibility with LTO-3.

The drives offer management tools that automate maintenance tasks by providing TapeAssure software that proactively monitors the status, performance, utilisation and health of drives as well as backup media; simplified data backup and recovery with StorageWorks MSL tape libraries that automatically back up and consolidate drives through an easy-to-manage network. Operational costs are claimed to be lowered with the tape drives’ increased capacity.

The tape drives reduce the risk and cost of losing business data by: improving security of both idle and data in transit through hardware-based encryption; enhancing data reliability with data rate matching - a feature that matches drive speed with host system speed to keep data streaming at maximum performance levels; reducing tape media deterioration by optimising data movement on the tape to ensure effective backups at high-duty cycles.
