Quantum DXi4510 and DXi4520 disk backup appliances

Tuesday, 18 May, 2010

The Quantum turnkey DXi4510 and DXi4520 disk backup appliances work with backup software packages to provide non-disruptive deduplication, assisting SMBs and remote offices to simply and cost-effectively address backup needs.

Both models come with all DXi software licences needed to support backup (including in VMware environments), deduplication and replication.

To help SMBs cope with limited backup windows, the appliances improve backup performance, typically by a factor of two to three. They also offer high deduplication ratios to combat the expense of rapidly expanding disk backup. In addition, deduplication enables cost-effective data movement, reducing the difficulty and expense of media management and off-site data transfer for disaster recovery purposes. With a simple NAS interface, the appliances make deduplication easy to deploy and operate.

The appliances enable remote office tape replacement while leveraging high deduplication ratios to decrease bandwidth requirements for replication to a central data centre for management and disaster recovery, providing edge-to-core data protection. The appliances are optimised for Symantec OpenStorage API and are currently undergoing qualification with NetBackup and Backup Exec. The OpenStorage API provides a single point of management across sites and storage tiers, automating the process of catalogue-aware backup replication.

The DXi4510 provides 2 TB of usable capacity and the DXi4520 provides 4 TB. Both models offer RAID 6 protection with up to 400 GB/h data ingest performance and support encrypted, compressed replication streams for up to 99% network bandwidth savings. They are designed to be easily installed by the user or a reseller partner.

Unlike software-based deduplication solutions, the appliances are claimed to provide rapid, seamless integration and maximum client performance without requiring changes to existing backup architectures or potentially disruptive media server upgrades.

The appliances leverage the same enterprise-class software as the DXi6500 midrange and DXi7500 enterprise systems.
