Microsoft to recall some Surface Pro chargers

Microsoft plans a global recall of power cords for some models of its Surface Pro tablets due to reports of overheating.

An advisory issued by the company states that damaged caused by the AC power cords being wound, twisted or pinched over a long period can result in overheating.

While Microsoft said only a small number of customers have reported problems, the company will recall power supplies sold with the Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 tablets before July 2015. The Surface Pro 4 is seemingly unaffected.

The company plans to release details of how affected customers can receive a free replacement cable shortly.

Intel has meanwhile patched a major flaw in its Driver Update Utility that could potentially allow attackers to remotely install malware on PCs.

The company has urged customers using the Driver Update Utility versions 2.0 to 2.3 to immediately obtain and apply the update.

The flaw could potentially allow attackers to instigate man-in-the-middle attacks and trigger malicious downloads by exploiting the fact that the software requests new drivers from Intel servers using an unencrypted connection. This has been fixed in the updated version.
