Equinix completes $66m expansion of SY5 data centre

Global digital infrastructure company Equinix has completed phase 2 expansion of its SY5 International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre located in Alexandria, Sydney. This AU$66 million investment adds 2150 cabinets, bringing current capacity to 3975 cabinets and colocation space of 11,310 square metres. SY5 is reportedly the largest IBX in Australia to date, with more than 9200 cabinets expected when it is fully built. Commenting on this expansion, Guy Danskine, Managing Director of Equinix Australia, said the expansion of the SY5 IBX reflects the company’s strategy to continue enriching business ecosystems with added capacity, so customers can unlock the potential of digital through interconnection. This includes moving out of legacy data centres and locating private infrastructure adjacent to their cloud providers to reduce latency and connect to thousands of service providers on Platform Equinix.

Danskine noted that there is significant momentum in Australia as technology spend accelerates, driven by the shift to as-a-service consumption models and hybrid multicloud being adopted as the architecture of choice. “As illustrated in our latest Q2 global earnings, digital infrastructure is a primary source of competitive advantage for digital leaders across all industries, with more distributed, more on-demand and more ecosystems connected than ever before. In Q2, interconnection services contributed to 16% of the total recurring revenue in Asia Pacific, driven by the continued strength of Equinix Fabric,” Danskine said.

Danskine forecasts that continued investment by the major hyperscale companies illustrates the growing momentum in Australia to ensure organisations have the capability to run highly available services across multiple regions in Australia. These investments are important for customers; when combined with Equinix’s ongoing expansion plans, which include the completion of its third data centre in Perth, they should lead to continued growth in Australia.
