Vertiv launches UPS tailored to AI workloads
Digital infrastructure provider Vertiv is aiming to capitalise on growing demand for data centres in Australia and across Asia with an expansion of its line of high-density uninterruptible power supplies.
The Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 family has been enhanced with the introduction of a 1.8 MW model designed to support large-scale data centres, AI environments and other power-hungry applications.
The system extends the capabilities of the existing platform to 250–1250 kW, and incorporates advanced UPS control capabilities developed specifically to address the rapid power swings associated with AI workloads.
The Battery Shield technology helps reduce unnecessary battery cycling during sudden load transitions, and the input power smoothing feature helps support more predictable input power flow while decreasing stress on upstream electrical infrastructure.
Vertiv Asia VP for Product Management Tony Gaunt said power infrastructure will need to adapt to the way data centre operations are being shaped by demand for AI workloads, with GPU clusters often transitioning from low utilisation to peak demand within milliseconds.
“AI is fundamentally changing data centre infrastructure requirements across Asia, driving demand for higher-density power systems that can respond faster and manage the effects of these dynamic AI workloads,” he said. “With the expansion of the Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 family, we are helping customers scale critical power infrastructure to maximum utilisation factors while supporting the resilience, flexibility and operational continuity required for future-ready AI deployments.”
The solution has been tested using a proprietary AI load simulator across multiple AI workload profiles, battery configurations, duty cycles and fluctuation ranges, Vertiv said.
