Udemy: Tech skills are the most in-demand skills in Aust

Online learning destination Udemy has released its Q4 2022 Workplace Learning Index showing tech skills are the most in-demand in Australia and the world. Open-source framework- and cybersecurity-related skills took the top spots, rising in popularity near the end of 2022.

The increasing demand for ASP.NET Core skills, which increased 116% in Q4 when compared to Q3, is driven by the exponential growth of digital transformation and connected devices, as well as the urgent need for modern, scalable applications that can meet the demands of cloud computing.

The demand for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) has been further reinforced by the rise in cybersecurity threats.

In 2022, cybersecurity courses have been a feature on the Workplace Learning Skills Index since Q2 where they debuted at number 10. Information Security was the number two surging skill for Australia in Q3.

“Professionals have the unique opportunity to upskill and gain the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the rapidly evolving field, opening the door to greater career progression and increased earning potential,” said Marlon Herft, Senior Director of Customer Success at Udemy Business, APAC.

Cybersecurity has become a critical focus for professionals from all departments of organisations in Australia, driven by the recent string of data breaches and the increasing demand for technology experts.

According to Herft, “the increase in demand for cybersecurity-focused skills reflects the growing recognition of their importance and the opportunities they present in terms of high salaries and job security”.

The top five surging skills in Australia, as featured in the Q4 Workplace Learning Index, are:

  1. ASP.NET Core 116%
  2. Software Architecture 82%
  3. CISSP 82%
  4. Google Flutter 64%
  5. Scala 56%

In addition to the top in-demand technical skills, the Q4 Workplace Learning Index also showcases the growing importance of interpersonal skills, with Behavioural Economics topping the list of the Top 10 Global Power Skills with a 436% surge in popularity.

The Udemy Workplace Learning Index is a quarterly report that provides insights into the skills that corporate leaders and employees consider essential for success. The data is generated from learners on Udemy’s enterprise learning solution, Udemy Business.

Methodology

The Udemy Workplace Learning Index is based on data from the learning behaviour of thousands of companies across the globe using the Udemy Business platform. All data is based on the country associated with a customer. Skills data compares the consumption of courses in the Udemy Business collection from Q3 2022 to Q4 2022.

All courses are associated with topics, with each course having up to five topics. These topics correspond to the trending skills within the report. For courses with multiple topics, consumption minutes are divided equally across all topics associated with those courses.
