Aussie tech sector salaries up 3.2%

Australian technology sector salaries increased by an average of 3.2% in the 12 months to June 2013, according to an annual survey.

But remuneration growth slowed in 2013 across all three technology sectors covered by the report - public, private and education.

The survey of more than 5000 tech sector professionals was commissioned by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and conducted by the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia.

According to the survey, the average wage increase exceeded growth in public sector salaries by around 0.1 percentage point. It also outpaced the consumer price index, which rose around 2.5% in the 12 months to end-March.

Private and public sector technology remuneration both increased 3.1%, while education sector remuneration grew 3.3%.

But this compares to a 3.7% growth for the private sector recorded a year earlier, an even stronger 4.6% for the public sector and 3.9% for the education sector.

Despite the slight slowdown in growth, ACS President Dr Nick Tate said the results prove that the technology sector provides one of the more financially rewarding career paths in Australia.

“While there is no doubt that the global economy remains challenged and domestic business confidence remains cautious, it is clear that the ubiquitous nature of technology has increased the demand for skilled technology professionals, [and this is being] reflected in remuneration.”
