Curtin University to open computation institute

Curtin University has revealed plans to open a new computation institute to improve Western Australia’s computational and data analytics capability.

The Curtin Institute for Computation (CIC) is being designed to ensure that the growing data analytics capability being built in the state is effectively deployed.

The facility will focus on building new research capabilities across multiple disciplines, as well as working with industry to develop new practical applications for the technology.

The CIC will draw on the skills of over 80 researchers from across the university. It will have core programs in big data, modelling and optimisation, simulation, visualisation and education. The facility will also provide capacity for Cisco’s Australian Internet of Everything Innovation Centre.

It will be led by computational chemist professor Andrew Rohl, who played a role in helping establish the Pawsey Centre as a supercomputing centre.

“We are entering a new horizon where large and complex data sets are providing new challenges and exciting opportunities for those who can harness the analytical and computational resources available,” Rohl commented.

“Not only will Curtin's full multidisciplinary skills be made available to solve unique theoretical and applied problems, but we also have the opportunity to build tomorrow’s research workforce.”
