Cloudflare launches Identity‍-‍Aware AI Gateway

Connectivity cloud company Cloudflare has launched a solution for giving IT and security teams greater visibility into how employees use AI at work.

Identity-Aware AI Gateway enables companies to see which employee or agent sent a request to an AI model, set individual or team-level spending limits, and automatically flag risky content.

A related feature is designed to learn what normal AI usage looks like for every person and agent on a network and alert teams when an activity breaks that pattern.

Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht said, absent the ability to tell who triggered costs or what potentially sensitive or confidential information is sent to outside AI tools, companies’ instinct is to lock down access to AI and restrict what teams can build to avoid bill shocks or accidental data leaks.

“Connecting our access controls directly to AI Gateway flips that dynamic,” he said. “Teams get the freedom to work with any AI model they choose. IT gets real-time visibility, guardrails, and the budget controls they actually need.”

He said companies can use the platform to surface easy-to-miss efficiency opportunities such as using lighter, less expensive models for simple tasks. Companies can also replace blind, shared API keys by integrating with existing identity provider and zero trust network access infrastructure to validate user and device posture before sending requests to the model provider.
