Digital Realty opens third Sydney data centre
Data centre operator Digital Realty has opened its fifth facility in Australia, the Digital Erskine Park II data centre in Sydney.
The company also revealed it has purchased an additional land parcel in Erskine Park that will be the home to its sixth Australian data centre.
The Digital Erskine Park II is a 7000 m2 date centre with a capacity of up to 17.4 MW of IT power.
The new facility has been built using Digital Realty’s 4.0 POD Architecture design, which uses a modular methodology to improve performance by using standard power and cooling building blocks for cost-effectiveness, design flexibility and energy efficiency.
It uses a state-of-the-art cooling solution that eliminates the need for water usage, as well as lithium-ion batteries rather than the traditional lead-acid batteries.
The new facility will be connected over dark fibre to Digital Realty’s existing Erskine Park connected campus. Through this link, customers will also be able to directly connect to the PIPE-IX, Australia’s second-largest internet exchange platform.
Meanwhile, Digital Realty has announced plans to build the Digital Erskine Park III, a 12 MW facility that once complete will also form part of the Erskine Park connected campus.
Design and planning for the new facility is expected to commence soon and, subject to planning approval and customer demand, the facility is expected to launch by 2020. Digital Realty expects to have invested over $1 billion in Australia once the facility is complete.
“We are excited to further expand our presence in Sydney, a key market for us in Australia and the wider Asia–Pacific region,” Digital Realty CFO for Asia-Pacific Krupal Raval said.
“The time is right for this expansion. Given the fantastic market demand we have seen for our newest facility that just opened, we have already started the design and planning process for the next phase of our Erskine Park connected campus. We expect to break ground soon, with the goal of delivering our next data centre for customers requiring critical IT space in Sydney by 2020.”
Digital Realty now has 12 data centres in the Asia–Pacific region, including three in Melbourne. The company operates 198 facilities globally.
