1.29m Australian software developers use GitHub
More than 1.29 million Australian software developers are using the GitHub platform, according to the company’s new Innovation Graph.
The report found that Australian developers and organisations own over 2.9 million repositories on the online platform, with Australian developers having uploaded code to GitHub more than 1.5 million times.
According to the report, JavaScript is the most popular programming language in Australia based on the number of unique developers using it, followed by Python and Shell. Python took over from Shell to take the top spot in the fourth quarter of 2022. Other popular languages include Dockerfile, Java, Ruby, Makefile and C#.
The GitHub Innovation Graph also found that MIT remains the most popular software licence, followed by Apache-2.0 and GPL-3.0.
GitHub VP for Developer Policy Mike Linksvayer said the new Innovation Graph is designed to meet the growing demand among policymakers, researchers and developers for a reliable source of data to identify global and local trends in software development and innovation.
“For too long, measures of innovation have focused solely on things like patents and research papers, while policymakers and researchers have had trouble finding reliable data on global trends in software development. GitHub’s solution is the Innovation Graph,” he said.
