ASG Group to expand Indigenous Trainee Program

Young Indigenous Australians will be able to apply for traineeships in IT, under a national program unveiled at ASG Group. The program, which has been in operation in Western Australia for the past year, aims to provide as many as 50 positions for Indigenous Australians aged between 19 and 27, who have an interest in a career in IT, by 2024.

The positions are in addition to the traineeships already offered by ASG Group to university graduates. ASG Group employs more than 2000 staff nationally and has offices in eight cities across Australia and Asia.

Dean Langenbach, CEO of ASG Group, said the program is aimed at encouraging more young Indigenous Australians to take up a career in IT at a time when demand for technology experts is rising.

“We are looking forward to expanding our trainee program nationally, following the success of our current group of trainees in Perth this year. Our aim is to have up to 50 Indigenous trainees through the program within the next three years,” said Langenbach.

Langenbach, citing figures from the federal government, revealed that Indigenous Australians are under-represented in the IT sector, with Indigenous students accounting for 2% of all enrolments in IT courses at higher education institutions.

“While we have made improvements in recent years, we are also conscious that our workforce should be much more representative of the wider Australian community — and that means we need to encourage greater participation in IT by the first Australians,” said Langenbach.

Langenbach added that the program represents a small contribution to rebalancing the workforce and, in the process, opening up a variety of career opportunities for young Indigenous Australians.

“As an Australian-born company that has been serving our clients for over two decades, we are committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace and that includes, of course, promoting inclusiveness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across our businesses,” said Langenbach.
