Cyber group to set up in Perth

A node of the federally funded, industry-led AustCyber organisation is to be set up at the Joondalup Innovation Hub in Perth.

The WA Node will focus on critical infrastructure, cybercrime and big data, drawing on Edith Cowan University’s expertise in cybersecurity research.

“As AustCyber furthers its partnership with the states and territories, we will achieve greater exposure to local and foreign markets, better linkages to investment and higher economic growth,” said AustCyber CEO Craig Davies.

“Local WA companies will benefit from the establishment of the WA Node through its alignment with AustCyber’s national cybersecurity innovation agenda and access to our programs.

“The existing cybersecurity capability in WA — particularly in critical infrastructure and cyber forensics — is a real asset nationally,” added Davies.

“Integrating the Node with the Joondalup Innovation Hub is a great way to leverage and connect these initiatives.”

The Joondalup Innovation Hub is an initiative of the WA Government’s $16.7 million New Industries Fund, which aims to support and accelerate new and emerging businesses.

“It’s great to see a national organisation like AustCyber recognising the potential of the Joondalup Innovation Hub and the great work already being done by Edith Cowan University’s cybersecurity school,” said Innovation and ICT Minister Dave Kelly.

The fund will provide $200,000 per year over four years to support operations and staffing, with AustCyber contributing $50,000 per year.

Recruitment of a local Node leader is underway, and the Node itself will be launched mid-year at a GovPitch event.

“I invite local data and cybersecurity companies to get involved in the upcoming GovPitch event, which will be a fantastic way for companies to engage with the Joondalup Innovation Hub,” said Minister Kelly.
