Finalists for WAI Awards 2021 revealed

The finalists for the inaugural ANZ Women in AI Awards for 2021 have been announced. Each of the 11 awards categories are judged on innovation, leadership, and inspiring potential, global potential and impact, and ability for the AI solution to do good for the community and citizens.

The awards, to be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art on 23 February, recognise and celebrate the achievements of Australian and New Zealand women in AI. This year’s finalists in the category of AI in Health include Michelle Perugini, Rahil Garnavi and Fatemeh Vafaee.

The finalists in the category of AI in Mining include Juliette Murphy, Holly Bridgwater and Angela Rodrigues. The panel of independent judges selected Sandra Johnson, Aurelie Jacquet and Kobi Leins as the finalists in the AI in Law category, while Wen Chen, Sammi Bhatia and Catherine Lopes were named as the finalists in the AI in Finance category.

Anastasia Volkova, Supriya Nair and Fiona Turner were recognised as the finalists in the AI in Agribusiness category. The judges named Fang Chen, Bonnie Shaw and Jiaming Li as the finalists in the AI in Infrastructure category. Additionally, Jamila Gordon, Liesl Yearsley and Holly Hutson were deemed the finalists in the AI in Manufacturing category.

Finalists in the AI in Cyber Security category include Lina Yao, Junae Kim and Sarah Erfani Nicholas. The judges also recognised Kerry Trentelman, Kate Yaxley and Niusha Shafiabady as finalists in the AI in Defence category.

Yolande Strengers, Cecile Paris and Michelle Aguilar have been named as the finalists for the AI in Innovation category, while Beena Ahmed, Lane Litz and Thushari Atapattu were recognised as finalists in the AI in Education category.

Every finalist will benefit from endorsement, prestige, recognition, opportunities for collaboration and media exposure. The winner of each category will also be eligible for the Grand Award: 2021 Australia-New Zealand Innovator of the Year.

The gala dinner will be hosted by multi-award-winning STEM journalist and Science and Technology Editor for NITV Rae Johnston.
