IBM at the forefront of machine learning R&D
IBM is at the forefront of global research and development into machine learning, with 5400 patents registered between 2017 and 2021, according to BanklessTimes.
Research from the cryptocurrency news site found that IBM is leaving its closest rivals Microsoft and Google in the dust, with the companies filing 2108 and 1342 patents respectively over the period.
Samsung and CapitalOne rounded out the top five with 937 and 921 patents respectively.
IBM’s machine learning focuses include natural language processing (NLP), automation and developing trust in AI. The company is also exploring a new frontier it calls fluid intelligence, which is designed to allow AI to crunch a wide range of information and explore linkages and new experiences by itself.
IBM’s R&D department is meanwhile pursuing approaches to building new AI systems that align with societal values in order to build trust in the technology. Its focus on NLP is aimed at building AI systems capable of breaking up vast amounts of text in any language.
