ICT jobs receive boost in NSW

Industry-specific scholarships are being provided by the NSW Government for students seeking careers in ICT.

These scholarships are expected to help meet the demand of an estimated 600,000 jobs by 2020.

“The demand for ICT skills will continue to grow, with the value of digital technologies to our national economy expected to balloon to $139 billion over the next three years,” said Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Small Business John Barilaro.

“In NSW, the government subsidises many Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses, including a wide range of IT qualifications, making them cheaper and easier for students to access.”

The NSW Government subsidises 69% to 90% of course costs for selected higher-level qualifications, up to Advanced Diploma level, including areas such as nursing and health care, engineering, and information and communications technology.

For students taking up their first qualification in courses such as a Diploma of Engineering – Advanced Trade, valued at $13,740, students will only pay $3780, with the NSW Government paying the remainder.

Barilaro said the NSW Government has committed $25 million to scholarships as part of the Jobs of Tomorrow program.

“We are leaders in ICT research capabilities and home to multinational companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google and IBM, employing 34,000 software and applications programming jobs, 21,000 graphic and web designers and illustrators, and 13,000 database and systems administrators.”
