Thoughtworks urges companies to be wary of gen AI risks
Technology consultancy Thoughtworks has recommended that companies proceed cautiously when it comes to the adoption of generative AI technologies.
The stratospheric rise of tools such as ChatGPT are among the key themes of the company’s latest Technology Radar report.
The report noted that in recent months, ChatGPT and other tools have reoriented both the technology industry’s and the wider world’s understanding of what’s practically possible with AI.
But at the same time, organisations need to be aware of the technology’s limitations and risks, according to Thoughtworks CTO Dr Rebecca Parsons.
“Most businesses are already experimenting with analytics and AI. We see the maturing of tools as further evidence of the mainstreaming of these technologies. Integration of AI with good engineering practices leads to more responsible, data-driven solutions that cater to a diverse user base,” she said.
“This is in contrast to generative AI, where we’re advising businesses to proceed cautiously and take care to avoid inappropriate uses that can lead to reputational and security risks.”
According to Thoughtworks, without high-quality data, teams implementing AI risk compromising accuracy.
Robust engineering practices are needed to address these risks, with examples including model validation, continuous integration and monitoring, the report stated.
