Oracle Exalytics in-memory business intelligence

Monday, 12 March, 2012

The Exalytics In-Memory Machine features in-memory business intelligence (BI) software and hardware for analytic and performance management applications.

With Exalytics, organisations can deliver custom and packaged analytic and performance management applications. Users can complement their dashboard and reporting projects with scenario modelling, planning and forecasting, all running in a single environment. Interactive real-time analysis helps organisations to react more quickly to changing business conditions.

The system features Oracle’s BI Foundation Suite and TimesTen In-Memory Database for Exalytics, enhanced for an Oracle server, designed for in-memory analytics. TimesTen In-Memory Database for Exalytics is a new release of the in-memory RDBMS, specifically designed for analytics. TimesTen offers support for OLAP grouping sets, built-in analytic functions and columnar compression. The Sun Fire server includes 1 TB of RAM, powered by the Intel Xeon processor E7-4800 with a total of 40 processing cores, 40 Gbps InfiniBand and 10 Gbps ethernet connectivity and Integrated Lights Out Management.

The system simplifies management with heuristic adaptive in-memory caching, which calculates what data is best stored in-memory for overall best performance and adapts to changing workloads. Exalytics does not constrain applications only to data that fits in-memory, but also leverages connected databases, data warehouses and OLAP sources.

An open solution, Exalytics is suitable for heterogeneous IT environments and can access and analyse data from Oracle or third-party relational, OLAP or other data sources including IBM DB2, IBM Netezza, Microsoft SQL Server and Analysis Services, SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW), Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) and Teradata Warehouse, in any combination.

More than 80 Oracle BI and Hyperion performance management applications are available for organisations to use in conjunction with Exalytics without application changes. These include all horizontal and industry-focused BI applications, such as Financial Analytics, Human Resources Analytics, Sales Analytics and Procurement and Spend Analytics and Hyperion Planning.
