More than half of SSD users experience data loss

Despite an overwhelming belief that solid state disks (SSD) are reliable, more than half of SSD users report experiencing data losses while using the technology.

A recent online survey from Kroll Ontrack, which received responses from 560 participants, found that 57% of SSD users had experienced data loss with SSD/Flash technology.

This was despite 90% reporting a belief that SSD failure rates were minimal and the technology was reliable.

The study also found that 75% of respondents believed the recovery of data from SSDs to be “nearly impossible or complicated”.

Adrian Briscoe, General Manager - APAC, Kroll Ontrack, said that recovering data from SSDs can be more difficult than from traditional disk media.

“In the case of SSD/Flash data loss, recovery can be more complex. SSD/Flash data reside in a more scattered format on the drive as compared to traditional hard drive media where data is stored more linearly,” said Briscoe.

“Despite the many benefits of SSD/Flash technology, data loss incidents from these devices are on the rise. In fact, Kroll Ontrack has seen a 20% increase in SSD/Flash recovery requests over the previous year,” he said.
