Macquarie Telecom opens IC3 East
Macquarie Telecom has officially launched its new Intellicentre 3 East (IC3 East) data centre facility in Sydney, which has been built with an initial investment of more than $85 million.
The Macquarie Data Centres facility was officially opened by Prime Minister Scott Morrison during a ceremony on Friday last week.
As part of the event, the Prime Minister observed a threat hunt with Macquarie’s ‘cyberwarriors’. The hunt involved using a library of more than 4000 threat intelligence playbooks to explore a government agency’s IT infrastructure, looking for patterns of compromise or vulnerabilities which could be exploited by cybercriminals.
Speaking at the event, Morrison said sovereign facilities like IC3 East will be essential to bolstering Australia’s cybersecurity posture as it seeks to take a leading role in the global digital economy.
“This centre we are finally opening today is about the economy, it is about the digital world that is transforming the world, and it is about our security,” he said.
“Increasingly, our economy and our security depend on each other. This campus is about both — a mighty $200 million data centre, Australian owned, Australian operated, one of the most trusted and certified in Australia, with a team of highly trained engineers delivering up to 50 MW of data storage capability.”
Macquarie already commenced billing earlier this month for a multimillion-dollar anchor contract with a leading global corporation for around 10 MW of capacity from the facility, a deal which spurred plans to increase the opening capacity of the IC3 East facility.
The company is also involved in the construction of its largest ever data centre at the campus, the IC3 Super West, which will increase its overall capacity to 50 MW.
