More than 2m Australians now coding on GitHub
More than 2 million Australians are now actively coding software on GitHub, with 367,000 having joined the platform in the last year alone, the company has revealed.
GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse report found that Australia now has the 19th largest developer community on the platform, and the local community is growing at the fastest annual growth rate on record.
Australian developers made more than 10.7 million open source contributions during the past year. Globally, more than 1.12 billion contributions to public and open source platforms on GitHub were made, making 2025 the most active year in GitHub history.
The report also found that AI is in heavy use among developers using GitHub globally, with 80% of new developers using Copilot within their first week. AI is also accelerating the development lifecycle, with a record high 5.5 million issues having been closed within the first year.
Meanwhile, TypeScript has overtaken Python and JavaScript to become the most used language on GitHub as developers optimise for safety, scale and AI readiness. Contributions in the language grew by over 1 million in 2025, a 66% year-on-year increase.
In Australia, JavaScript remains the top programming language, but TypeScript has grown from 11th to 4th in the list of the most used languages over the past five years.
The report also found that in 2025 there were 4.3 million AI-related repositories created globally, with Australia ranking as the 17th biggest source of AI-repo contributions.
GitHub VP of APAC Sharryn Napier said AI is transforming how developers work.
“We’re seeing record numbers of projects shipped and meaningful activity this year as AI expands what developers can do and accelerates how fast they can build. More developers moving faster is good news for Australia as we continue to tackle our tech skills shortage and productivity challenges,” she said. “AI has already changed the game. Now, agentic AI is the next leap forward — a powerful productivity lever for Australia’s digital economy, especially when developers embrace it as a true collaborator, unlocking a new wave of innovation and growth.”
